Garlic planted in spring takes 90 days from planting to harvesting. Garlic planted in autumn will overwinter, which takes 220 days from planting to harvesting.

Garlic is a bulb that has a spicy taste and pungent odor, is an indispensable seasoning in our daily life. According to modern medical research, garlic has effects include antibacterial and antiviral, reducing blood lipid and antioxidant, improving immunity, reducing the risk of cardiovascular diseases, and anti-tumor.

In addition, garlic has a high nutritional value. Garlic bulbs are rich in carbohydrates, proteins, phosphorus, selenium, germanium, vitamin B1, and niacin, Garlic sprouts are rich in potassium, carotene, vitamin B2, and vitamin C. White garlic bulb has more cloves than the purple garlic bulb. Purple garlic has a milder order and taste than the white garlic. In cooking, purple garlic retains its taste longer than the white garlic. Purple garlic contains anthocyanin, which is a good antioxidant ingredient. Regular intake of anthocyanins is good for the skin. Also, purple garlic has a good sterilization effect.

The planting season for garlic is late fall to early winter, or you may also plant on early spring in warmer climates such as the weather in the West. It's better to plant the garlic bulbs in fall, so it will produce foliage by early spring. Sowing in autumn early will cause the plant's age easily and decrease the number of yields. Similarly, sowing late will shorten the growing period of garlic seedlings, which will affect garlic yield.

Garlic likes a cooler temperature. The most suitable temperature for garlic growth is 53.60 °F-77°F (12 °C-25 °C) . Garlic does not have a very specific type of soil. But soft and sandy soil helps garlic take root.

Before planting garlic in your garden, we suggest you to grow garlic bulbs in water first. You can see the process how the garlic bulb grows and harvest the green garlic sprouts (above the garlic bulb) for cooking.

Garlic sprouts are young seedlings that have grown to a certain degree. The tender garlic leaves and sheaths can be harvest and eat. Garlic seedlings contain a variety of nutrients, which can effectively prevent influenza, enteritis, and other diseases.

Growing a garlic bulb in water is faster than planting in the soil.

You may ask why planting garlic in water is faster than soil. Well, to answer that question, inorganic salts and fertilizers are some of the garlic needs that dissolves in water, which are then absorbed by plants. Making it easier to for the garlic to grow since the substance is already dissolved in water. On the contrary, planting garlic in soil dissolves inorganic salts and fertilize slower in water, affecting it to absorb and grow slower than planting in water. Although planting garlic in water grows faster, water-planted roots are more vulnerable than soil-planted roots.

How to Store Garlic Bulb?

Garlic is a plant that is very easy to germinate. It is usually easier to grow garlic because it does not require anything to help germination. Garlic in the bag grows green seedlings in a few days no matter what season it is. The shelf life and flavor of garlic after germination are greatly reduced.

There are three ways to store garlic:

1. Drying

Dry the fresh garlic for a week first. Remember to turn the garlic 1-2 times a day. If drying with sunshine, cover the garlic with a basket or fabric when the weather is too hot. After drying, tie up the garlic with a rope, hang it under the eaves, and keep it ventilated so that the moisture in the garlic can be preserved and it is not easy to sprout. This drying method can store the garlic for one year.

2. Placing Low temperature with air isolation

The main reasons garlic start sprouting are humid environment and sunshine, which cause the garlic to conduct photosynthesis and start growing. In order to prevent it from germinating, we must protect it from light. Prepare some dry water bottles, then pull out the garlic cloves one by one and stuff them into the bottle. Close the lid and put it in a black plastic bag ( dark color can block light) and store it in a cool place. It's best to keep it in the refrigerator. Low temperature is not conducive to the germination of garlic. But if you always open the refrigerator it might affect storing garlic. Don't put the garlic in the frozen layer of the refrigerator, as it will easily damage the garlic.

3. Placing in High Temperature (if not store for planting)

High temperatures can also inhibit the germination of garlic. Put the garlic in the microwave and heat it on medium heat for 1 minute. Heat it until the garlic feels a little hot to the touch. Adjust according to your own microwave. If the time is too long, it will be cooked; if there is an oven, roast the garlic at 113ºF (45°C) for 15 minutes. After such a high-temperature treatment, the garlic can be placed freely and not easy to sprout. Of course, don't throw it in a humid place otherwise it will be rotten.

Is a Sprouting Garlic Edible?

If the garlic is sprouting normally, and the color of the sprout is green, then this kind of garlic is edible after removing the garlic buds. If you don't want to eat sprouting garlic, then just plant it! Plant your own garlic and harvest its flower, sprout, and bulbs!
